Spray Smart – The New Generation of Industry 4.0 Spraying Valves by Walther Systemtechnik GmbH

The reliable conveying, metering and dispensing of lubricants plays a key role in ensuring the function and safety of products in almost all industries. For more than two decades, Walther Systemtechnik GmbH has been developing metering components and metering systems and, with the current I4.0 product family, has once again shown itself to be an innovation driver in oiling and greasing technology.

Whether pumps, media reservoirs, filter systems or modules for air bubble ejection, within the new product family important process and status variables can be recorded in real time by using suitable sensors and transferred via analogue and digital interfaces – for example to the plant control system. This provides the user with new ways to increase process capability, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and product quality.

This can be illustrated by the latest addition to the I4.0 product family, the WSV spray valve. Thanks to its integral design, the valve for applying lubricants, which was developed from scratch, features a high level of functionality in a small installation space. It combines a pressure sensor, a heating unit with associated temperature control and the electronics for controlling, monitoring and evaluating the process data. An analog output, four digital inputs and outputs and an Ethernet port enable extensive connectivity to peripheral devices as well as remote parameterization and remote diagnostics of the valve. Furthermore, additional software add-ons as well as firmware updates can be subsequently installed and activated if required, giving the operator maximum flexibility.

Due to its compact design, the smart valve can be easily integrated not only into new but also into existing oiling and greasing systems. Furthermore, there is no need for external control technology or additional programming, which significantly reduces the costs and time required for commissioning.

The highest added value can be achieved by combining several fluid components of the I4.0 product family. This allows different process data to be evaluated and to maximize the plant performance indicator – keyword Big Data. A corresponding expandability ensures the user the necessary flexibility to be able to face future challenges in a volatile environment.
