Technology Trends in Future Fuels for Maritime, Energy & Power Generation

Driven by the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the search for clean energy the transportation and energy sectors are investing heavily in alternative fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia and biofuels such as methane. According to the Hydrogen Council’s 2023 December update, Europe is leading the way with 540 projects in the pipeline, equaling 222 billion US Dollars, almost 40% of global investment and Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub analysis shows that e-ammonia could emerge as the most highly adopted maritime fuel amongst hydrogen-based fuels, whilst liquefied bio-methane dominates amongst biofuels.
