Valvoline HT-12 Green and Pink: premium coolants for modern engines, BMW & VW approved<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most important fluids used in internal combustion engines, in addition to engine oil, is the coolant. It performs many different functions, the most important of which is to dissipate the excess heat produced by the engine into the cooling system. There are many different types of coolant used in modern vehicle installations, and the development of coolant technology is still continuing to meet the ever-increasing challenges relating to lower emissions, new engine hardware and any other associated requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A typical coolant is a mixture of glycol and water (preferably demineralized water), that is enriched with various performance additives. The presence of glycol is important so that the coolant does not freeze under low temperatures, which could cause possible failure of the cooling system, and consequent damage to the engine. The performance additives (e.g. anti-corrosion inhibitors, anti-foam additives, etc.) are designed to enhance the performance of the cooling system, protect, and extend the life of the coolant fluid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several years ago, the most popular coolant used in vehicles was based on an ethylene glycol-water mixture containing phosphate-silicate performance chemicals. These types of fluids were used in older generation vehicles, had a service life of up to two years, and were available in either green or blue colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2000 onwards there was a rapid development of coolant technology, linked to the development of modern low emission and high efficiency engines. This created a demand for coolants with an extended service life (up to 5-6 years), this new coolant strategy was based on OAT (Organic Additive Technology) technology and various versions of this technology began to be prescribed by the OEM\u2019s. This coolant technology was given the name of HOAT (hybrid organic additive technology), in this new technology there were no phosphate additives used, instead they chose a mixture of inorganic oxides such as silicates and carboxylates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mixture of glycol and water that makes up a typical coolant is colorless. The color is only added for identification purposes by adding special dyes, the color can be linked to certain technologies such as an OEM recommendation or a specific patent linked to a certain chemistry, it is often the case that coolants are formulated from similar technologies but may have a different color (depending on the manufacturers’ requirements), therefore, when selecting the correct coolant for the application, the criteria of fluid selection by color should not be used, alternatively identify the correct technical specification recommended in the vehicles owner\u2019s manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2021, Valvoline, a leading manufacturer of premium automotive lubricants and fluids in collaboration with Haertol, introduced the latest generation coolant for BMW and VW passenger cars, these new coolants are called Valvoline Antifreeze Coolant HT-12 Green (for BMW) and Valvoline Antifreeze Coolant HT-12 Pink (for VW Group vehicles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These fluid technologies are based on mono-ethylene glycol, which together with a patented combination of SI-OAT technology with additional performance additives, provides improved heat dissipation properties, especially developed for the new down-sized, high-powered engines. Valvoline HT-12 fluids are ideal for cooling systems manufactured from the latest generation technologies and materials including aluminum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valvoline HT-12 fluids have shown very good results in the CAB Flux Compatibility test, outperforming competitor products several times, these improvements are measured in the terms of the stability of the silicon concentration at the end of the manufacturers validation test, this added protection significantly reduces the chance of corrosion in the cooling system. As a result, Valvoline HT-12 fluids obtained the latest approvals from BMW (Valvoline Antifreeze Coolant HT-12 Green BMW LC-18) and VW (Valvoline Antifreeze Coolant HT-12 Pink VW TL 774-L (G12evo), therefore these fluids can be used in all engines linked to the manufacturers above, including those manufactured after 2018*. Valvoline HT-12 fluids have a recommended service life of 5 years or 250,000 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike other OEM fluids, Valvoline Antifreeze Coolant HT-12 Green and Valvoline Antifreeze Coolant HT-12 Pink are fully backwards compatible (as the only fluids on the market) with previous generations of coolants used in BMW and VW, which means that Valvoline Antifreeze Coolant HT-12 Green can be used in BMW engines requiring fluids approved to the BMW LC-87 technology (coolant used in BMW engines since 1987), and Valvoline Antifreeze Coolant HT-12 Pink can be used in all engines that required fluids made from previous G12 +, G12 ++ and G13 technologies (coolant used in VW Group since 1996).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
